What Drives BMW?

What drives a company to perform well? Is it simply money or an eagerness to be the best – to have an enviable reputation? What drives a company to better itself if the money is already rolling in? If the money is already coming in then a certain reputation has already established itself so why change things?
There are world class companies, such as BMW, who are not entirely content with a certain turnover.

Their commitment goes much further than producing an ok car. Not only do BMW strive to make the best cars, they also aim to do it without damage to the environment. This issue has become a fundamental part of the BMW ethos and in true BMW style, they have to be the best at it.

Of course, business still needs to make money otherwise it becomes a charity. Building a business on a basis of sustaining the environment needs to be carefully monitored from both aspects which is why the Dow Jones Sustainability Index was set up in 1999.

The DJSI is the first global index set up to track the financial performance of companies that are sustainability driven. In sixteen countries, seventy DJSI licenses are held by companies and they manage almost six billion dollars of company funds. Various sectors of industry are set up including an automobile sector and, every year since the system was set up, BMW have had a presence. For four years in a row, BMW have are leading the automobile sector, thus maintaining their reputation at being the best of all they put their hand to.

Sustainability was announced by the BMW Group’s Board of Management as being at the core of the business back in 2000. Conservation of resources and comprehensive product responsibility are listed as being the main initiatives driving BMW in their bid to produce the best cars whilst saving the planet.
